a life in art
i emerged from the ground, feeling like a tree,
rooted in the deep tendrils of nature, playing
in the natural colors of twig and earth.
deeply looking at trees is a form of reading them
that influences me greatly. relishing the works
of artists soutine, kosoff, and van gogh
have helped shape me as well.
i discovered art at twenty-one while attending
pensacola junior college. i then majored in
art at the university of south florida, which
led to a summer at yale and my mfa from
the san francisco art institute.
i’m happiest when the impulse to make art grabs
hold and takes me to a new place in which
narrative, expressionist, unconscious,
stories appear in ordinary settings.
